The electrochemical behavior of ondansetron was studied at a tritolyl phosphate – based carbon paste electrode. It was found that ondansetron is irreversibly oxidized with a one electron transfer. In the pH range of 2-4 peak potential and peak height do not depend on pH. When determining ondansetron, 0.1 M sodium sulfate solution was found to be the best supporting electrolyte, providing the lowest detection limit. Based on this study a simple and rapid voltammetric method was developed for ondansetron determination in human urine. Derivative voltammetry was used to improve the resolution and increase the sensitivity. For ondansetron quantification in human urine, nonlinear standard addition method was used; a detection limit was 7·10-7 M.

Key words: ondansetron, carbon paste electrode, differential pulse voltammetry, derivative voltammetry
