Application of X-Ray Spectral Analysis to the studies of Materials of cultural heritage

Discussed in this review were the particular features of an application of X-ray spectral analysis in solving different problems related to the study of materials and objects, which are of archaeological, historical and cultural heritage. The following objects were analyzed such as icons, frescoes, oil paintings, watercolours, pictures painted on wood, glass, canvas, paper and other materials and also various table-wares, jewellery, instruments of labour. The studied materials were leather, tissues, paper, wood, pig-ments and related materials, various glass- and ceramic wares, iron-, copper-, silver-, gold-based metal alloys, constructional materials of different origin. The study of a chemical composition of particular materials, for example, several metal ores, obsidian and others is very often necessary to determine raw material sources: pre-historical mines, quarries and others. The essential attention was given to the works related to the study of pigments, glass-, ceramic- and metal-wares. The increasing number of publications on these fields was noted.
