Silica-organic materials with immobilized xylenol orange and calcein: fabrication, physico-chemical properties, and detection of metal ions

New hybrid silicaorganic materials with immobilized dyes xylenol orange and calcein were prepared with the aid of the sol-gel method and by the sorption immobilization of dyes on silica surface. The optimum conditions of synthesis were found, and kinetics and equilibria of sorption of dyes were characterized. Also the stability of materials in respect to leaching of dyes was investigated. The complexing equilibria of immobilized xylenol orange and Cu(II), Zn(II) and Pb(II) ions were described, and the high level of energetic heterogeneity of materials was revealed. Hybrid materials with immobilized xylenol orange were found to be prospective for visual test detection of heavy metal ions in solutions. Hybrid materials with immobilized calcein can be used for detection of Cu(II) in the presence of another transition metal ions. The unreliability intervals and the detection limits were determined for the test procedures.
